You can sign a PDF in Chrome on a computer with its built-in PDF viewer: open the file, choose the drawing or annotation tool, place a visible signature, then download the edited copy. Chrome’s pen creates a visual mark; it does not create a certificate-based digital signature that verifies identity and document integrity. Confirm that the recipient accepts a drawn signature before you start.
Google’s Chrome PDF guide lists the viewer’s current functions, including drawing and signing paperwork. Controls can move as Chrome updates, so use the tool name and icon shown in your version.
A fuller PDF workspace in Chrome
For more than a quick pen mark, use Sign PDF Document. Our Chrome app lets you draw a signature or upload a PNG, JPEG, or WebP image, then place, resize, and rotate it precisely. You can also add names, dates, stamps, text, and notes; merge PDFs or images; reorder, rotate, add, or remove pages; and export or print the finished file. It works locally in your browser, so your document and edits stay on your device and no account is required.
It is intended for visible electronic signatures and PDF preparation. If the recipient requires a certificate-based digital signature, follow that certificate workflow instead.
Sign a PDF in Chrome step by step
- Open the PDF in Chrome. Drag the file into a Chrome window, use File → Open File, or select a PDF link. If it opens inside another site, download it or use the site’s open-in-new-tab control.
- Find the annotation or drawing tool. In the PDF toolbar, look for a pen, markup, or annotate control. If the toolbar is compact, widen the window or open the overflow menu.
- Choose the pen settings. Select a color and line width that will remain legible when printed. A dark, medium-width line is usually easier to see than a thin pale stroke.
- Draw in the signature area. Use a mouse, trackpad, stylus, or touchscreen. Zoom in before signing if the field is small. Use undo or the eraser to remove a misplaced stroke.
- Finish the annotation. Select the viewer’s Done or equivalent control if it appears. Review the whole page, not only the signature line.
- Download the edited PDF. Use the PDF viewer’s download control and choose the option that saves your changes. Give the file a clear name such as
form-signed.pdf. - Verify the downloaded copy. Open the downloaded file in a new tab or another PDF reader. Check the signature, all pages, and any form fields before sending it.
Chrome PDF viewer: what it can and cannot do
| Task | Chrome’s built-in viewer | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Draw a handwritten-looking mark | Yes, where the annotation tool is available | This is a visual annotation, not identity verification |
| Add typed text to a form | Depends on the form and viewer controls | Some PDFs have interactive fields; others need a text annotation tool |
| Save a changed copy | Yes, using the viewer’s download/save control | Reopen the downloaded file to confirm edits were included |
| Apply a certificate-based signature | Not the same as using the pen tool | Use the certificate and signing workflow named by the recipient |
| Sign a protected or certified PDF | Restrictions may prevent editing | Ask the owner for the approved process; do not try to bypass protection |
The viewer’s availability and controls can differ by device, file, and Chrome version. If you cannot see a pen or annotation option, that does not mean you missed a hidden signing feature; the current viewer may not expose it for that file.
If you cannot sign or save the PDF
- No drawing tool appears: open the downloaded file directly in Chrome and check the full toolbar. If the tool is still absent, use a trusted PDF editor or your device’s built-in PDF markup app.
- The PDF is read-only or certified: the sender may have restricted changes or applied a certificate. Request a signable copy or the designated signing service.
- Your strokes disappear: use the viewer’s explicit Done control if shown, then download the version that includes changes. Open that local file before closing the tab.
- You are using a phone or tablet: Chrome’s desktop PDF controls may not match the mobile browser. Open the PDF in a PDF app with annotation support instead.
- The file is a scan: it may be a page image rather than a fillable form. You can still add a visible annotation if the viewer allows it, but the text fields will not become interactive automatically.
Keep the signed file safe
Before uploading or emailing the document, check that the address or destination is correct. A signature image is sensitive: do not post it publicly or reuse another person’s signature without permission. Keep the unsigned source in a separate location. If the PDF contains financial, identity, health, or business information, use the signing workflow approved by the document owner and avoid uploading it to an unknown service.
Common questions
Can I add a saved signature image in Chrome?
The built-in drawing tool is intended for annotations and may not offer an image-import control. If you need to upload a PNG or JPEG, use an editor with an Add image or Import signature feature. See how to add a signature image to a PDF.
Is a signature drawn in Chrome legally binding?
That depends on the document, the parties, the applicable rules, and whether the recipient accepts that method. A drawn mark does not by itself prove identity or create a certificate-based signature. Ask the recipient if acceptance matters.
Does Chrome upload my PDF when I annotate it?
Opening a local PDF in the browser is different from uploading it to a third-party website. Check the address bar and the workflow you are using: a PDF opened from a website may still be served by that website. Google’s help page describes Chrome viewer features; consult your organization’s policies for confidential files.
Can I sign without a mouse?
Yes. A trackpad, stylus, or touchscreen can work when your device and viewer expose the drawing tool. For a small field, zoom in first and verify the stroke after saving.
